5 signs of gaslighting that are easily overlooked in everyday life
17 August 2026 · Caroline
The term gaslighting comes from an old play in which a man systematically convinces his wife that she is losing her mind by changing small things around her and then denying it. That's exactly what it's about: not one big argument, but many small moments in which your perception is called into question.
1. “You're just imagining it.”
The classic. Something you clearly remember is dismissed as imagination, often in a calm, convinced voice, which makes it even more confusing.
2. You apologise for their reaction
You say something ordinary, the other person reacts out of all proportion, and in the end you are the one apologising. It's a pattern that becomes automatic over time.
3. You've started keeping records
Many women who experience gaslighting at some point begin saving messages or writing things down “so I can prove it later”. That's a clear sign that you no longer trust yourself.
4. You're told you're too sensitive
This phrasing shifts the problem from the action to your reaction. Instead of “that wasn't okay”, you hear “you're overreacting”.
5. You feel isolated without being able to say exactly why
Gaslighting works especially well when you have little contact with others who could offer an outside perspective. Withdrawing from friends and family is often a consequence, not always a conscious decision.
The first step back to yourself
If you recognise yourself in several of these points, the most important first step is not to act immediately but to make room for your own perception again. That's exactly what a first conversation is for, without any judgement.
